About us

Chidiya’s ECD- centre is a response to the growing need for quality education, and a tool for elevating the general standards of the local community. We believe that the most efficient approach to change is to begin with the youngest, as their brains are developing faster than in any other stage of life. Proper nutrition, sanitation, safety and secure attachments in these years are crucial to healthy growth and development.

History

Chidiya opened in 2020, in a garage in Orange Farm. We started with 8 children and 2 teachers.

IWe built a new centre, where we opened two classes in 2021.

In 2022 we opened our third class, accommodating a total of 34 children.

We have 9 staff, who are all locally employed, in line with our vision of improving the living standards in Orange Farm. These are: 2 qualifies teachers, 4 assistants, 1 cook and 2 security guards.

Philosophy

Our approach is inspired by the Scandinavian Learn-through-play method, where the framework is built on free play and interaction.

Playtime creates powerful learning opportunities across all areas of development. Through play the children develop motor, cognitive, social and emotional skills and creativity in a fun way.

It is more important to us that a child has learned compassion, respect and how to express their emotions when leaving Chidiya, than that can spell their name perfectly. These skills will provide a strong foundation for when they move on to Grade R, where the focus is more academic.

Activities

Provide therapy and treatment services for the children who have been affected by trauma

Tailor individual meal plans to meet specific nutritional needs

Assist with acquiring birth certificates for the children who are stateless

Assist with enrolment into primary school

Distribute donations of food and other essential goods

Mission

To battle poverty through providing quality early childhood education to disadvantaged children in Orange Farm.
